CCRAS - Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Patiala

This Institute was established in Patiala as Central Research Institute (Ay.) in February 1971. The three storied building standing in 3.26 acre of land is provided by Punjab State Government on lease to carry out research activities in the field of Ayurveda. The Institute is carrying out its activities through OPD and IPD and Pharmacy. In June, 1979 this was renamed as Indian Institute of Kayachikitsa (IIK) and again was renamed as Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI) in November 1999. In September 2008, the name of the institute was changed as National Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Research, with the mandates of drug standardization and quality control. In 2016 this Institute got a new name Central Ayurveda Research Institute for Respiratory Disorders (CARIRD). The Institute was again renamed as Central Ayurveda Research Institute, in December 2020 with the mandate of Pharmaceutical Research and Clinical Research focusing on Respiratory Disorders.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Patiala an institute functioning under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences. Our institute is dedicated to strengthening the scientific foundation of Ayurveda through evidence-based research and quality healthcare services.

The institute is actively engaged in clinical research, pharmaceutical research, and the development of effective Ayurvedic interventions for the benefit of society. At the same time, we are committed to providing accessible and quality healthcare services through our OPD and IPD facilities, serving a large number of patients every day.

Our vision is to integrate the wisdom of Ayurveda with modern scientific approaches, thereby generating scientific evidence on the effectiveness and safety of Ayurvedic therapies and promoting their wider acceptance in healthcare.

We remain committed to excellence in research, patient care, and the dissemination of authentic Ayurvedic knowledge for the benefit of society.

Brief Introduction

 Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Patiala is a premier Institute under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, New Delhi, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India dedicated to research in Ayurvedic Sciences. This Institute was established as Central Research Institute (Ay.) in the month of February 1971 under the leadership of Sh. Pandit Keerti Sharma. The land and building were provided by State Government of Punjab to carry out research activities in different fields of Ayurveda. The Institute started its activities through Out Patient Department (OPD), In Patient Department (IPD) with 50 bedded hospital and Pharmacy.

This Institute was renamed as Indian Institute of Kayachikitsa (IIK) in the month of June, 1979 and again was renamed as Central Research Institute (Ay.) in the month of November 1999, however the activities of the institute remained same.

In the month of September 2008, the name of the institute was changed as National Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Research (NIAPR), Patiala by the Department of AYUSH, Govt. of India with the new mandates viz. manufacturing of safe, effective, affordable Ayurvedic drugs based on strengths of Ayurveda considering National and global needs on scientific lines at par globally accepted norms, development of standards of identification, quality control parameter, standardization of raw materials and development of standard operating procedures for various classical drugs etc.  However the facilities of 50 bedded In Patient Department (IPD) was closed.

The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) is an autonomous body of the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy), Government of India. It is an apex body in India for the formulation, coordination, development and promotion of research on scientific lines in Ayurveda and Sowa-Rigpa system of medicine.
